{"id":13700,"date":"2023-08-18T10:10:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T08:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arredocad.com\/blog\/import-a-plan-from-autocad\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T09:13:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T07:13:04","slug":"import-a-plan-from-autocad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arredocad.com\/en\/news\/expert-answers\/import-a-plan-from-autocad\/","title":{"rendered":"Import a plan from Autocad"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">August 2023<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to import a plan in .dwg or 2D .dxf format and obtain 3D walls<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you already have a .<strong>dwg <\/strong>or .<strong>dxf 2D<\/strong> plan of your project created with AutoCAD for example, you can import and open it with ArredoCAD: in this way drawing 3D walls will become much quicker!<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&rsquo;s discover how to do this.<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on &ldquo;<strong>File<\/strong>&rdquo; and from the drop-down menu click on &ldquo;<strong>Import<\/strong>&rdquo; and select &ldquo;<strong>Import DWG\/DXF 2D<\/strong>&rdquo; as shown in the picture:<\/li>\n<\/ol><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c17\/606\/64ac17606bb1f569333988.jpg\" alt=\"importa-progetto-dwg-arredocad.jpg\"><\/figure><ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The window that you see below will appear (fig. 1). Click on &ldquo;<strong>Open<\/strong>&rdquo; and select your .dwf or .dwg plan (fig.2). Then a preview of the plan will appear (fig. 3). <\/li>\n<\/ol><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c20\/529\/64ac20529adf7542016639.jpg\" alt=\"importa-dwg-dxf2d.jpg\">(fig.1)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c20\/6b5\/64ac206b59330884185389.jpg\" alt=\"apri-progetto-planimetria-dxf.jpg\">(fig.2)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c20\/7ce\/64ac207ce0246081365854.jpg\" alt=\"pianta-progetto-dxf.jpg\">(fig.3)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Before importing the file please check if the scale is correct. The default scale is 1:1000. Modify the value of the scale until<strong> X (width) and Y (height) <\/strong>correspond to the real measurement of the plan in meters.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your file could contain other plans, texts, sections or other elements that could interfere with the calculation of the measures of the plan or that you don&rsquo;t wish to import. In this case click on &ldquo;<strong>Layers<\/strong>&rdquo; and deselect the layers you would like to hide (fig. 4). In the preview you can see in real time that the deselected layers disappear. Then Click on &ldquo;<strong>Import<\/strong>&rdquo;.   <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c20\/8ba\/64ac208bacff2696002536.jpg\" alt=\"layers-progetto.jpg\">(fig.4)<\/p><ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once you have imported the file, you can check if the measurements are correct using the function &ldquo;<strong>Distance<\/strong>&rdquo;. You can find it on the command bar on the left. Click on 2 edges of a wall to know the exact length (fig. 5).<\/li>\n<\/ol><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c20\/a28\/64ac20a289bad505008136.jpg\" alt=\"arredocad-strumento-distanza.jpg\">(fig.5)<\/p><ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before drawing the walls, set the height using the command &ldquo;<strong>Par<\/strong>&rdquo; (fig. 6) that you find on the command bar on the left. The wall thickness is calculated automatically: position the mouse on a line of a wall (without clicking) that you would like to draw and press the space bar on the keyboard. The line will become <strong>red <\/strong>(figs. 7 and 8).  <\/li>\n<\/ol><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c21\/72a\/64ac2172ae4ab757789149.jpg\" alt=\"6-dati-parete.jpg\">(fig.6)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64a\/c21\/89b\/64ac2189be98f477615310.jpg\" alt=\"7-dati-parete.jpg\">(fig.7)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64b\/e36\/142\/64be36142fa81595370503.jpg\" alt=\"linea-rossa-parete.jpg\">(fig.8)<\/p><ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repeat the operation for the other line of the same wall then a window will appear showing the value relating to the thickness of the wall. Confirm <strong>clicking on OK <\/strong>(figs. 9 and 10). To select the lines more easily you<strong> can zoom<\/strong> on the image scrolling the wheel of the mouse, it is advisable not to be positioned near the edges of the walls. <\/li>\n<\/ol><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64b\/e36\/63e\/64be3663ede6d913415100.jpg\" alt=\"9.jpg\">(fig.9)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/uploads\/public\/64b\/e36\/802\/64be36802ea3f282957857.jpg\" alt=\"10.jpg\">(fig.10)<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you import a plan, it can happen that this is positioned far from the point of origin of the worksheet (represented by 2 arrows, a blue one and a green one). To move the plan click on &ldquo;<strong>View<\/strong>&rdquo;that you find in the menu on the top and on &ldquo;<strong>Set origin of the scene<\/strong>&rdquo;, then click on one edge of the plan.
