The design of public spaces, sustainable innovations and the use of new technologies directly affect people&rsquo;s psychological wellbeing. However, despite growing interest, there are still gaps in understanding the link between the environment and mental health. This article explores these gaps by examining the interactions between environmental psychology, urban design and mental health.   <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The link between environmental psychology and mental health<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psychological wellbeing depends not only on the individual&rsquo;s internal conditions, but also on the surrounding environment. Environmental psychology shows that the <strong>design of public space can significantly reduce anxiety and depression<\/strong>. The inclusion of urban green areas, like parks and gardens, is related to a reduction in stress levels and to an increase in psychological wellbeing. According to many studies the inclusion of green spaces in urban areas reduces mental fatigue and contributes to psychological recovery.   <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This phenomenon can be explained by the concept of &ldquo;salutogenesis&rdquo; which highlights the importance of environment for health.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Therapeutic architecture<\/strong> and inclusive design practices focus on creating spaces that not only meet practical needs, but also support psychological resilience. For example, the use of natural materials, the creation of bright and airy environments as well as the design of spaces that encourage social interaction contribute positively to mental health. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Emerging technologies and assessment methods<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advances in technology have greatly facilitated assessment techniques in environmental psychology. Tools such as the Geographic Information System (<strong>GIS<\/strong>) offer experts an<strong> in-depth analysis<\/strong> of the influence of urban elements on mental health. GIS allows designers to clearly visualize the accessibility of green spaces, human flows and distribution of public space, optimizing the urban environment for psychological wellbeing.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arredocad.fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com\/storage\/app\/media\/blog\/2025\/aprile\/1\/tecnologie-e-urbanistica.jpg\" alt=\"Schermata di un Sistema di Informazione Geografica (GIS) con analisi degli spazi urbani\"><\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, qualitative methods such as resident interviews and field observations have become essential for<strong> gathering detailed information<\/strong> on the impact of public spaces on human behaviour. The use of technologies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/arredocad.com\/en\/news\/trends\/augmentred-reality-and-virtual-reality-possible-uses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)<\/a> is changing the landscape of urban design, allowing designers to simulate experiences in different environments and assess their psychological effect before implementation. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The urban sustainability as pillar of wellbeing<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Integrating the <strong>sustainability of urban design <\/strong>directly improves mental health. Public spaces designed in an environmentally sustainable way not only improve environment, but offer also <strong>benefits <\/strong>for psychological wellbeing. The design of green buildings, the use of renewable energy and the creation of urban green spaces are crucial to reduce the negative impact on environment and improve the quality of life.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ecopsychology explores the relationship between human behaviour and nature, highlighting the importance to design spaces that foster a deep connection to nature. This integrated approach to urban sustainability focuses on ecologically responsible environments that stimulate reflection and psychological wellbeing. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The impact of the Pandemic: redesigning spaces for the new normal<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pandemic has led to significant <strong>changes <\/strong>in our way of living and <strong>interacting with public spaces<\/strong>. Social distancing measures and lockdown reduced the time spent outdoors and increased the importance of homely environments and green spaces. This period highlighted the importance of flexible spaces that can adapt to different needs to<strong> promote mental health<\/strong>.  <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the pandemic research shows that the access to green spaces and the possibility to socialize in a safe way are crucial for psychological wellbeing. Towns are starting to redesign their public spaces not only as safe meeting places, but also as refuges and points of connection with nature. <\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the future prospects are<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The environmental psychology is an ever-evolving field that increasingly influences urban design and planning. Attention to the <strong>design <\/strong>of<strong> public spaces<\/strong>, <strong>urban sustainabilit<\/strong>y and<strong> new technologies<\/strong> are crucial to promote psychological wellbeing.
