“We must give the child an environment that he can utilize by himself: a little washstand of his own, a bureau with drawers he can open, objects of common use that he can operate, a small bed in which he can sleep at night under an attractive blanket he can fold and spread by himself. We must give him an environment in which he can live and play; then we will see him work all day with his hands and wait impatiently to undress himself and lay himself down on his own bed.”

These are the basic rules developed by Maria Montessori an Italian educator and pedagogue lived at the beginning of the 20th century. One of her central ideas was that in the space where children live everything should be within a child’s reach and designed to cater to and foster personal growth. Montessori thought that home should not be for but of children. This is often very difficult, but parents can design first the children bedroom and then make some changes to the rest of their home according to the age of the child.

Home furniture and design should increase the free rein of children in a natural and fanny way avoiding that they hurt themselves.

This means to plan and furnish space according to children needs: small furniture that can also be move; small tables, small chairs but also shelves and boxes that he can easily use.The space has to be big to allow children to play and to move comfortable with the right furniture that has to be strong, light and made up of natural materials: wood for furniture and bed frame, cotton for curtains, blankets and pillows.

Children like to go barefooted, so the use of a soft and comfortable carpet for the newborns is very important above all when the ground is not covered with warm material like wood, so that they can freely hop around and play.

As to colours you can free rein to your imagination also according to the taste your children. Coloured walls as well as wallpaper on which you can find the same decoration motives that are in the room are very good solutions.

Also in the bathroom you child has to feel free and to help him you can use a small bench to allow him to reach his toothbrush or the soap.
